Anytime you are in a dark area in the cave, you will run a substantial risk of "falling into a pit" unless your lamp is on. Always keep your lamp with you, and keep it on whenever you're in the cave. You can turn it off when you're aboveground, of course, to save the batteries. Just don't forget to turn it back on at the appropriate time!
